There has been an exciting development in the energy sector. Energy local has been encouraging the use of locally produced energy supply to match local demand through the use of local energy clubs. We at Sustainable Hockerton have grasped this opportunity to work with local people. Over the past couple of months, a volunteer steering committee has been busy setting up Southwell’s Energy Club, named Energy Local Southwell Area. Joining the club will enable members to access 100% renewable energy at a more affordable rate. It will be supplied directly from locally-owned wind turbines and solar arrays situated in the Southwell area when available. When local demand exceeds local supply, 100% renewable electricity and green gas will be supplied to club members by the energy company 100 Green. The club is now accepting membership enquiries from residents in Southwell, Fiskerton cum Morton, Upton, Normanton and Hockerton, which are the areas covered by Southwell electricity substation. The full tariff information will be released soon, after the new price cap comes into effect.
A number of information evenings and stalls have been planned to allow plenty of opportunity for you to find out more. No booking is necessary, just turn up! More details about the club can be found at www.energylocal.org.uk/southwell or just contact southwell@energylocal.org.uk

In more detail. Our local club will bring together local consumers, and owners of solar arrays and/or wind turbines (such as Sustainable Hockerton’s community-owned wind turbine). The benefits will be local use of local energy and cheaper bills. How will it work? Together, club members will agree a “Match Price” for locally produced energy, that will kick in when supply matches usage. This price should hit the sweet spot where consumers are saving money and local electricity generators are getting a better deal than their usual export price. This will also make it more viable for farmers, businesses and communities to establish and maintain renewable energy installations locally. For example. The Match price might be set at 15 pence per kWh. This is more than the generators currently get, which is about 7 pence per kWh and much less than consumers pay on average which may be 26 pence per kWh. It is cheaper than what consumers normally pay.
