In 2006 residents of our small Nottinghamshire village got together to look at how they could reduce their community’s carbon footprint. Sustainable Hockerton was born!
The aim of Sustainable Hockerton is to make Hockerton a more sustainable village and reduce the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere. This would include meeting its own energy needs from renewable sources.
• Reduce energy demand
• Generate electricity from renewable sources • Heat homes from renewable sources
• Reduce impact from travel
• Reduce the amount of waste produced
• Increase the amount of self-sufficiency in water and water treatment
• Raise the awareness of climate change issues through education
We now have a 225kW wind turbine and 112kW solar PV across four local sites. We are actively looking to work with local business to expand local generation – cheaper energy for business and extra support for sustainable development. We are using revenue from our systems to help local projects that support sustainable development.
There has also been an exciting development in the energy sector. Energy local has been encouraging the use of locally produced energy supply to match local demand through the use of local energy clubs. We at Sustainable Hockerton have grasped this opportunity to work with local people. Over the past couple of months, a volunteer steering committee has been busy setting up Southwell’s Energy Club, named Energy Local Southwell Area. Joining the club will enable members to access 100% renewable energy at a more affordable rate. It will be supplied directly from locally-owned wind turbines and solar arrays situated in the Southwell area when available. When local demand exceeds local supply, 100% renewable electricity and green gas will be supplied to club members by the energy company 100Green. The club is now accepting membership enquiries from residents in Southwell, Fiskerton cum Morton, Upton, Normanton, Maythorne, Brinkley and Hockerton, which are the areas covered by Southwell electricity substation.
