The SHOCK fund to encourage locals to improve their sustainability is a fantastic idea! If you are in Hockerton apply on the village fund page above..
Thanks again Simon and Sustainable Hockerton! This is our second time using the funding as we’ve decided to expand on the mini orchard we were able to set up last year with the help of SHOCK. The trees we put in last year have settled in very well and put on lots of growth. I let a couple of the apple trees grow a few fruit to sample their taste, although with an eager 12 month old I didn’t get much of a look in as he seemed to enjoy picking and eating them straight off the tree!
Hopefully this year we’ll start to be able to get some actual harvests – and I’ll hopefully be able to recruit our now almost 1.5 year old as chief fruit collector! Thanks again to SHOCK for this fantastic opportunity to improve our sustainability! Katie
We have lived in Hockerton for over 20 years and have benefitted from the SHOCK grant several times, to implement environmentally-friendly changes in our home. In previous years we have replaced light bulbs for LED ones, bought a water butt & purchased lined curtains for our hallway.
This year we were given a grant towards loft insulation to reduce heat loss & hopefully reduce our fuel bills. It’s a fantastic opportunity for Hockerton residents & we are grateful for the work that the Hockerton Housing project do to raise our awareness of sustainability & support us to make steps to change for the better. Thank you.

Dear, Sustainable Hockerton
We’ve recently moved to the area and I’ve always been keen on setting up a fruit and veg garden as we had great success with one I set up in our previous home.
The fund has enabled us to get this idea off the ground, starting with a fruit tree orchard as there’s nothing better than home grown eating and cooking apples!!
I’m now looking forward to expanding on this in the near future with some veggie planters and berry bushes and can’t wait to teach the little one all about gardening in the process!
Thank you so much again!!
Katie
Dear Simon, Sustainable Hockerton
I am pleased to now have my loft insulation installed.
The insulation was only installed on Wednesday 26th, … just in the last few nights when we’ve seen the temperatures really start to drop outside…. one room in particular upstairs has always been very cold, but in the last few days there hasn’t been such a marked excursion when entering this room. Also the house gets cold very quickly once the heating is off, but already I have not had to switch it on again once it has been on for a couple of hours mid evening.
I’m sure this measure will save considerable energy in this one house alone, so we are doing our bit to try to reduce environmental effects also.
The application through the SHOCK fund has been supported by £500. …. it has enabled me to have a task towards sustainability carried out which I couldn’t have otherwise afforded at this time.
Best Wishes,
Lyndsey

“The SHOCK project seemed too good to be true! I’d never heard of an organisation giving so generously to regular people. We’ve lived in Hockerton for a year and thought it was time to look further into their offer. I was surprised to see gardening equipment, seeds and planters on the list of things we could buy with their £200 fund. We had been wanting to teach our toddler about growing fruit and vegetables so I’ve just bought her a new gardening kit! I also purchased the ’There is no planet B’ book for us and an age appropriate storybook for my little daughter too which I’m looking forward to reading with her.
We were able to purchase draft excluders and insulating door tape as well as a fan for our wood burning stove to make our home warmer and more efficient. I feel confident that thanks to SHOCK we will make big leaps towards living more sustainably. Thank you so much!”

‘Electric bikes are terrific. Since I’ve got my Cube Kathmandu I zoom down to Southwell to do the shopping and leave the car at home. Sail up the hill coming back from Normanton crossroads – I used to dread it on my old bike – and carry everything in the saddlebag. Cycling all over the place now: Sherwood Pines? No problem from Hockerton for a 74-year old with an electric bike! Coffee on the bench at Carlton-on-Trent? Can be there in 25 minutes.
I recommend it for everyone over 50. Get the bicycle back in your life and watch your car collecting cobwebs …

Get your support from the village fund.
> Once again can I repeat what a great initiative this is. It has certainly given in the “nudge” to replace most of our house lights with LED’s which are not only use less energy, they are better than halogens. This in turn has made us that bit more aware of sustainability, hence the move to a hybrid car, again a better alternative.
