Since its inception, Sustainable Hockerton has aimed to invest in a wide range of activities that will make the Parish economically, socially and environmentally sustainable. Our funding comes from revenue generated by our wind turbine and solar PV systems since 2010. For example by 31st March 2024 £88 823 had been spent in the village.
As a resident of Hockerton parish, Sustainable Hockerton Limited (SHL) would specifically like to support local residents in their latest efforts to become more sustainable. SHL offers financial support for households and businesses in Hockerton. Offer ends 31st March 2026. What people say about it can be read here.
Applying is a simple four step process: How to apply
- Check Sustainable Hockerton funds what you want to buy, the details of eligible items can be found by clicking:
general information and eligible item list for SHL’s 300+ offer.
- Download step 1 application form complete and return it then wait to receive the go ahead from SHL.
- Once approval is received Download the step 2 claim form stating how you would like to be paid with proof of purchase.
- Give feedback so others can learn from your experience. (See some comments below) Note if you have received a grant in a previous year there is a short survey to complete before the subsequent grant can be awarded. This feedback helps us all find out what is working well , or not so well, on our journey towards sustainable living.
Activities funded so far include solar PV arrays on local businesses, the installation of a heart start kit, with related training; social events; and visits to the local sustainable living exemplar Hockerton Housing Project, electric bikes and more. People some times like to get together and buy larger items which they then share. They combine their grants to facilitate this. This is very much encouraged as the sharing culture hopefully reduces resource use and increases social interactions.
What people say:
Good Afternoon, Just a quick email to say thank you again for the funds towards the E-bike, I finished building it Sunday, and have commuted to work for the last 3 days totalling 75 miles averaging approx. 19mph. Its a brilliant piece of kit, I love cycling, but the e-bike kit really gives you that extra momentum up the hills especially at 5am! I would highly recommend one to anybody for commuting.
Thanks again Nathan

In respect of the opportunity to claim this annual allowance from SHOCK (Sustainable Hockerton) I wish to extend my thanks and gratitude for the positive impact you are making towards our community. We are relatively new to the area and were unaware of such positive acts made by yourselves until the Hockerton Parish Council brought it to our attention. We sourced a Ninja Smart Cooker (14-in-1) which includes a pressure cooker function and are amazed at the efficiency and reduced times required for cooking in general. Had SHOCK not made us consider this option (from their published list) we would most likely not have purchased one. This will make a small contribution towards our reduced carbon footprint and we will continue to investigate other means by which further refinements can be made,
Best regards,
Mark
Each idea is judged on its merits against the broad sustainability criteria set out in our guidance document, on residents’ stated preferences, and on the availability of other key resources such as time and skills!
We want to hear from local residents and businesses if you have an idea you are keen to take forward.
